Description

DARE to be You (DTBY) aims to increase parenting skills and children's resilience among high risk families (SAMHSA-NREPP, PPN). DTBY offers a variety of programs for youth and their families, but only the component for families with preschoolers is reviewed here. This component is comprised of 10 to 12 weekly sessions that each include two hours of workshops and a family meal. DTBY seeks to increase parent's self-esteem, self-efficacy, and child development knowledge while teaching effective parenting techniques (PPN, SAMHSA-NREPP). By building resiliency, the program seeks to reduce later drug and alcohol use (DTBY). DARE to be You is not affiliated with the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program (FYI).

Expected Beneficial Outcomes

Reduced behavior problems among children
Improved parenting skills and parent-child communication
Increased parent self-esteem and self-efficacy
Increased child development

Evidence of Effectiveness

DTBY is a suggested strategy to increase parenting skills and children's resilience among high risk families (PPN). Available evidence indicates that DTBY can increase parent's self-esteem. In the short-term, the program can convince parents that they, rather than fate, can influence their lives and their children's outcomes (PPN, FYI). DTBY also appears to improve parenting by helping parents avoid overly harsh punishments, discipline effectively, and set limits (PPN, SAMHSA-NREPP). However, additional evidence is needed to confirm these effects.

The program cost about $266 per family member in 2006 (SAMHSA-NREPP).

Implementation Examples

United States

Evidence Rating

Level of effectiveness based on a scan of academic literature and key recommendations of leading organizations.

  • Scientifically Supported Numerous studies or systematic review(s) with positive results
  • Some Evidence Research suggests positive impacts; further study may be warranted
  • Expert Opinion Recommended by credible groups*; research evidence limited
  • Insufficient Evidence Evidence limited or unavailable; further study warranted
  • Mixed Evidence Evidence mixed; further study warranted
  • Evidence of Ineffectiveness Research consistently shows program is detrimental or has no effect

Although many policies and programs are recommended by credible groups, we apply the rating ‘expert opinion’ only when policies are recommended but limited scientific evidence of effectiveness is available.

* The American Heritage Dictionary defines credible as 'capable of being believed; plausible.' and 'worthy of confidence; reliable.' To be considered an 'expert recommendation,' policies and programs must be recommended by one or more organizations that are recognized for their impartial expertise in the area of interest and have limited evidence available.
